Own Sewing Machine. Walking Foot for Sewing Cutting Mat, Rotary Cutter (Teacher has spares if not available) Quilting ruler – 12” or other. Neutral coloured thread (bone or Ivory if quilt fabrics are light in colour or grey if quilt fabrics are dark in colour) Safety pins 1/2in or 1in masking tape or painters (low tack tape) to help with marking the quilting lines Erasable marker or chalk marker for drawing quilting lines Fabric for quilt as indicated below. This is a double sided quilt. Therefore material list for fabric below is for ONE SIDE of the quilt only. You will need to double this for both sides. I have separated the fabric into for the two sides to give you an opportunity to make 2 completely different quilts tops for each side. One side can be bright colours, the other side pastels OR one side can contain solid colours the other side prints OR kids prints on one side, slightly more grown up prints on the other OR floral prints on one side and more manly prints on the other – the choices are limitless. NOTE: Directional Prints and Stripes are very hard to work with, so it is best to avoid any of these types of prints because you need a lot more material to make them work correctly. Fabric Requirements for EACH side of the quilt. 1 Fat Quarter or 20cms of Colour 1 (note if you are buying 20 cms, this will be enough for both sides of the quilt centres) 2 Fat Quarters or 40cms for Colour 2 o 60 cms of Colour 3 80 cms of Colour 4 1.2 meters of Colour 5 0.5meter Fabric for Binding. Quilt low loft Batting – Batting comes in several widths from 1.5 meters wide to 2.7 meters wide. Depending on Width of batting you need sufficient for 60” square (1.5 meters). There are many to choose from – cotton, polyester, mixed batting, bamboo batting. Choose only low loft batting as this is easier for beginners to work with. High-loft (puffy ) batting requires walking foot on the machine to prevent puckering. If not making a double sided quilt, you will need to buy backing fabric – 3m will be required.
