Tai Chi Chuan : Improve Balance and Strengthen Legs


A series of exercises using the principles of Tai Chi Ch’uan to increase mobility by relaxation, mindfulness & body awareness, aligning with gravity, & practise. Ch’uan is ‘fist’ suggesting power, but with training and awareness your body remains ‘loose’. We relax and surrender to the ground, using gravity to hold us in balance. The power is effortless. We use the other person’s energy and strength, for effortless power. The stillness within can defeat the tense energy from the other.

Topics Covered include:

1. Warm up exercises using arm movements, Correct stance, turning from the waist, slow breathing exercises, turning from waist, cat walk, meditation to become aware of the body internally, the first 2 postures of the Tai Chi form (wave, ward off right), cool down exercises. 2. Checking stance (some posture adjustment may be required), turning exercises, walking tai chi style, meditation, Practice of first 2 posturee, then nest 2 – ward of left and ward off right diagonally, cool down exercises. 3. Roll back practice using each leg as leading leg, adding next posture (roll back, press & push), practise all postures. 4. Repeat exercises and meditation. Practise all postures so far learnt. 5. New exercises: Lunges using Tai Chi principles with feet planted on ground; fingers of one hand gently resting on wall lift one leg & with other hand resting hip joint of the working leg (‘full’ in tai chi parlance) fell opening and closing of the joint, repeat on other side, next 2 postures of tai chi, and practise the flow of postures now learnt. 6. Repeat exercises & add 2 more postures, then practise all postures. 7. Repeat exercises & add 2 more postures, then practise all postures. 8. Repeat exercises & add 2 more postures, then practise all postures.
