This teaching course opens with a general system to enable you to handle every writing project. There is no doubt, after attending this course, you will complete your writing project in reasonable time, if you put into practice what you will learn and stick at it.

Topics Covered include:
(1) Introduce themselves and outline their project and why they are here? (2) How to plan your project and where to get additional material. They are asked to bring something to read aloud for the next session. Introduce the characters and the environment in which the story (or family history) takes place. Hold back on certain characters, create a sense of anticipation prior to their arrival. Back stories - necessary to give characters depth and credibility. Seed the story, so you can have a payoff in the final chapter. You cannot do this without a plan. Also introduce remaining important character/s. How to push the story using dialogue, so you're not spelling things out. How the dialogue reveals character. There are only three ways (1) What others say about them, (2) What they say about themselves, and (3) Their actions - which is the most powerful of all. It doesn't have to be three climax points, they may use as many as they like, but we will use three because it's practical. The third one is the climax of the story, after which the story needs to conclude as quickly as possibly. Every situation has a non-person, which is an often neglected character who sees more than the antagonist and protagonist think. Also develop the protagonist (reasons to identify with him/her) and develop the antagonist (there are lots of good ways to be wicked). Mannerisms, distinctions and oddities that define each chapter and sets them apart. Face the face. Bringing together all the characters at the end - in the same room (if you're Agatha Christie). The peak of the action. The twist at the end. Conclude and get out of there as quickly as possible. Questions - about anything they need to know. How to submit to publishing companies. How to self-publish, online or privately. And - as a bonus - how to sell your writing (magazines, etc).

Whatever is necessary to explain to the group their intended project. This may include notebooks, photographs and diaries. $50
Items to be purchased during the course
It would be good if they had a laptop - not necessarily to bring to class, but to work on at home. Word is a good writing program.
