| Sewing: The Basics and Beyond
Learn to sew or build on your existing skills in a class designed for the absolute beginner, those with basic sewing skills or the more advanced sewer. Master sewing basics and how to use your sewing machine, expand your sewing knowledge and skills, finish those unfinished items, have assistance with fitting or just enjoy the opportunity to sew with help at hand if needed. Students will be taught how to sew an item/s of their choice using commercial patterns. This course includes pattern selection, alterations, layout, cutting, construction methods and sewing machine operation. More experienced sewers will be guided through the construction of garments of their own choice and will be encouraged to explore new techniques. Participants should be able to complete a basic garment or item by the end of the course.

Topics Covered include:
. During this course the intention is that the following techniques will be covered, but not necessarily in the order given. Parts of the course may be adapted to suit the needs of the class. Choosing a pattern to enhance your body shape. Taking body measurements. Choosing pattern size and fabric. Use and care of the sewing machine Seams and seam finishes Requirements for lesson 2. . Students will work on their own choice of project, at their own pace. Skills learnt will depend on the needs of the student. Altering, laying and cutting garment/item of choice. . Demonstration of marking techniques to aid garment construction eg chalk, tailor tacks, tracing wheel and carbon . Pressing techniques and use of the iron Ironing tools eg sleeve board, tailors ham etc Interfacing, types and fusing technique . Application of traditional and invisible zippers using different techniques . Types of, marking, sewing and cutting buttonholes. Types of buttons. Button sewing . Application of different types of waistband including both hand and machine finished. . Hems and hem finishes, where to use them, both hand and machine finished
By the completion of this course students should be able to construct a garment or item of their choice using basic sewing techniques. Students will have an understanding of the operation of a sewing machine and feel confident in using it. Students should be able to independently read a pattern, purchase sewing supplies, take and interpret measurements, cut, fit and sew an item of choice. More advanced or experienced sewers will be encouraged to expand their knowledge and ability by exploring more advanced sewing techniques and develop a greater level of accuracy and proficiency in their sewing.
On the first session bring
Beginners: if you have a sewing machine you wish to use please bring it and the sewing machine manual, thread, pen and basic sewing kit (see below) to the first lesson. A pattern and fabric etc will be required for week 2. 40 cm x approximately 115 cm wide broadcloth, poplin or calico (for samples) cut in to 20 cm x 20 cm squares. More experienced sewers: if you have a sewing machine you wish to use please bring it and the sewing machine manual, a pattern and fabric etc of your own choice, thread and basic sewing kit (see below) to the first lesson. Basic sewing kit: Scissors Thread clippers or small scissors Pins Needles Quick Unpick or seam ripper Marking chalk Tape measure Scotch brand magic transparent tape 12mm wide Lead pencil Ruler (a 30cm ruler is fine)
Items to be purchased during the course
Students will require a pattern and fabric of their choice. The cost will be dependent on their pattern and fabric choice. The materials estimated cost listed below is for the basic sewing kit and sample fabric. $20
